Ivette Colón

Howdy, I’m Ivette!

I’m a graduate student in the Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, working with Tim Rogers in the Knowledge and Concepts Lab and Paula Niedenthal in the Niedenthal Emotions Lab. I primarily study how we represent social and visual concepts in neural networks (including the brain and computational models). I’m particularly interested in how social and visual representations retain task-irrelevant information about what we see, and how these representations vary based on individual differences in cognition.

During my graduate training I have also worked with Dr. Emily Ward in the Visual Cognition Lab at UW, where I conducted several behavioral studies surrounding face processing. In particular, I studied a) What kinds of faces people find consistently “familiar”, and b) What kinds of face information we process automatically, even in tasks designed to induce Einstellung (a “mechanized state of mind”).

Prior to coming to UW, I was a student and full-time researcher in Dr. Alice O’Toole’s Perception Lab at The University of Texas at Dallas, studying representations from convolutional neural networks trained for face identification.
